with one more new venture in synchronizing learning with technology in this year 2014 by digitalizing 60 years old Herbarium here in Andhra Loyola Campus. The Department of Botany, Andhra Loyola College Vijayawada has started a Digital Herbarium project where plant specimens are being digitized so that students and researchers can access information about each specimen, location, the collector's name and botanical name at a click of the mouse. The information will be helpful for the study of Plant taxonomy and geographic distributions. It is used to catalogue or identify the flora of an area and to understand the variability of form in the plants and the natural distribution over which the plants grow. Environmental scientists make use of such data to track changes in climate and human impact on plant species.
The history of Andhra Loyola College Herbarium dates back to 1954 which was incepted by the eminent person Sri. S .N .Rama Swamy, who was a famous writer, published a number of books on plants and he was the first HOD of our Department. The real momentum was achieved in 1966 consequent to the joining of Sri. D. Lakshmana Rao, Garu.

The structure of ALC Herbarium is based on Bentham and Hooker system of classification. The Herbarium at present contains more than 5000 specimens representing 800 species, 480 genera and 120 families of Angiosperms. In this year as we are celebrating a Diamond Jubilee of our College. In this juncture we are also very happy to mark the same year in incepting Digital Herbarium in which third B.Sc students took active role in bringing this into reality. Under the current initiative, the work on the digitalization of more than 3,500 specimens representing 800 species, primarily of medicinal, aromatic and economic plants at ALC- Herbarium has been initiated. As a project guide I thank Rev. Fr. G.A.P. Kishore, SJ, Principal for his encouragement, Management for their financial assistance, Staff and Student community for their support.
